A car packed with explosives blew up in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing at least 89 people and leaving scores injured.

The explosion took place at a busy market in the Urgon district of Paktika province when people were shopping for the Ramadan fast. According to the BBC, a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden vehicle into the market. The attacker detonated the explosives after police ordered him to stop his car, CNN reported.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the huge blast destroyed some 30 shops and dozens of cars. At least 89 people were killed and 42 people were wounded by the blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Taliban insurgents said they had not carried out the attack, BBC reported.
