Florida plane crash: Piper Cherokee makes emergency landing on Caspersen Beach in Venice

A man was killed and his daughter seriously injured when a small plane made an emergency landing on a beach in Florida on Sunday, Sarasota County Sheriff's spokeswoman Wendy Rose said.
Local authorities say the plane lost power shortly before 3 p.m. Pilot Karl Kokomoor, 57, of Englewood, Florida, radioed Venice Municipal Airport and said he would be unable to land his 1972 Piper Cherokee at the airport and would instead attempt to land on Caspersen Beach, where he could use the hard-packed sand along the shore as a runway.
Moments later the plane landed on the beach and struck Ommy Irizarry, 36, and his 9-year-old daughter, Oceana Irizarry, killing the father and seriously injuring the little girl.
Oceana Irizarry was airlifted to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, where she was listed as being in critical condition.
Neither Kokomoor nor has passenger, David Theen, 60, also of Englewood, were hurt, though a woman who witnessed the accident suffered a heart attack.
The accident is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration.
