A plane safely made an emergency landing in Rome's Fiumicino airport after its landing gear malfunctioned on Sunday night.

The Airbus A320 aircraft was flying in from Madrid and belongs to Italy's national carrier, Alitalia.

The aircraft's right-side landing gear failed to deploy properly during a thunderstorm.

The jet made an emergency landing at Rome's main airport and toppled onto its right wing.

Ten of the flight's 151 passengers sustained minor injuries.

"The pilot and crew were good, very good. But we passengers were, too, even though there was a lot of tension," said an unnamed passenger, according to UPI.

"We expected worse. We became aware that something was wrong when the airplane continued to circle," said another passenger quoted in the same report.

The exact cause of the malfunction is being investigated.
