Gaza conflict: truce collapses after Israeli soldier captured by militants
  • 9 years ago
A three-day truce between Israel and Hamas collapsed just hours after it began after an Israeli soldier was abducted by militants on Friday.

The truce was announced by the U.S. and the U.N. and took effect at 8:00 a.m. local time. At about 9:30 a.m., an attack was launched against Israeli forces during an operation to destroy tunnels used by militants, CBS reported. One Israeli soldier, identified as Hadar Goldin, was captured during the attack.

Senior Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzok told CBS News that the group had captured one soldier and killed two others. Israel confirmed that two soldiers were killed in the clash near the tunnel entrance, according to CBS.

The White House strongly condemned the abduction and called it an “outrageous action” and called on Hamas to release the captive, CBS reported.
