Drunk man’s AK-47 bullet pierces cop’s body armor, killing him during standoff in Charleston

Tragedy struck Charleston Monday night when Joseph Matuskovic, a 17-year-veteran officer and father of three, died in a standoff at an apartment complex in South Carolina.
Matuskovic was killed when a bullet, fired from the other side of a closed door, pierced his body armor.
Police responded to reports of a drunk man banging on doors at the Garden Apartment Complex.
The suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Michael Oswald, was inside with his AK-47. He fired a round at the officers through the door.
The first bullet burst through Matuskovic’s vest.
The standoff turned into a nine-hour event, involving more than 100 cops. Police eventually used a robotic camera to verify they had hit their Michael inside the apartment.
But before it was over, two other cops were taken to Medical University Hospital for gunshot wounds.
Oswald was reported to have no known mental illness or addictions, but had been arrested previously on charges of simple assault. He owned the gun legally.
Police later said heavy duty vests are reserved for SWAT teams.
