A Taiwanese police officer was brutally killed when a gang dragged him from a nightclub and beat him in front of hundreds of revellers early on Sunday morning.

Police say a riot began when 26-year-old Siao Ruei-Hong, understood to be affiliated with a local triad gang (蕭叡鴻) went to the club to seek revenge for the the treatment of friends Zeng Wei-hao (曾威豪), 28, and his girlfriend Liou Sin-tong (劉芯彤), 22, who had fought with security the night before.

Police officer Syue Jhen-Guo (薛貞國), 38, rushed to the scene on Sept. 14 to try to ease the tension. During the chaos, Syue was dragged outside by dozens of gangsters. They beat the officer for over a minute using sticks and knives. Syue was left bleeding beside the road, and was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Zeng and Liou then turned themselves into police the following day. The courts later detained them along with their gangster accomplice, Siao.
