Jersey Shore’s The Situation indicted for dodging $9 million in taxes

Former Jersey Shore star and Dancing With the Stars contestant Michael Sorrentino, aka “The Situation,” along with his brother Marc Sorrentino, were indicted Wednesday on charges of not properly paying taxes on $8.9 million in income from The Situation’s promotional activities.
The brothers pleaded not guilty in federal court to tax and conspiracy charges that could land them in the slammer for several years. Both were released on a $250,000 unsecured bond.
Authorities said the Sorrentino brothers fraudulently claimed millions of dollars in personal expenses as business expenses. The brothers allegedly claimed expensive clothes, high-end cars, personal grooming and direct payments from the businesses to personal bank accounts, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
The unreported income was allegedly received by two companies controlled by the Sorrentino’s, MPS Entertainment and Situation Nation.
According to the indictment, the brothers also made money from a vodka company, an online clothing business, publication of an autobiography and a comic book with The Situation as a superhero. The two also made money off The Situation’s endorsements of vitamins, DVDs, clothing lines, jewelry, tuxedos and sunglasses.
The Situation’s appearance fee for club openings and other events ranged from $1,500 to $48,000, all of which went unreported by both brothers.
According to the seven-count indictment, The Situation faces up to 11 years in prison and $600,000 in fines, while his brother faces up to 14 years because of three additional charges.
