Police ambush: Officer shot in the face directing traffic on Louisiana highway in morning ambush

A Louisiana deputy was wounded during an apparent ambush in St. Charles Parish Thursday morning, according to local reports.

Cpl. Burt Hazeltine, who has been with the department for more than a decade, was directing traffic in a school zone when a gunman, described as a white male in his late 50s, fired several shots at the officer from inside of a silver truck.

The wounded officer fired back but missed the suspect. Doctors said the deputy’s bullet proof vest may have saved his life.

Hazeltine was hit three times and had a bullet lodged behind his left eye and his arm and another that penetrated his lung.

Within minutes of the shooting deputies arrived on the scene, dragging the man out of the truck and into custody.

Hazeltine was taken into surgery, according to local reports. He may lose his eyesight and is listed in guarded condition.
