A Fulton County police officer was killed in an ambush shooting near Fairburn, Georgia on Wednesday morning.

Four Fulton County police officers were dispatched to the suspect’s home on Parks Trail in the Cedar Grove neighbourhood after responding to a shots fired call at midnight Wednesday, according to WSB Atlanta.

The suspect was reportedly intoxicated, had already left his house and started walking through the neighborhood while firing an assault style rifle, USA Today and WSB Atlanta reported.

The suspect ambushed the officers in thick fog. An officer reportedly escaped injury when a bullet ricocheted off his belt radio.

Another officer, later identified as Detective Terrence Green, was struck in the back of his head and died later at hospital.

The suspect was wounded during the shootout and is currently in police custody at a hospital, according to USA Today.
