Police in New Jersey are investigating an officer-involved accident that left two pedestrians dead in Secaucus early Wednesday morning.

41-year-old Jason Champion and 34-year-old Nuwnah Laroche, both of New York City, died after a police car struck them as they were walking along the northbound lane of the New Jersey turnpike.

The pair was reportedly walking to find assistance after their Cadillac Escalade broke down around 1 a.m., ABC 7 reported.

Officer Arsenio Pecora, 46, struck them with his car. Photos of the accident appeared to show damage to the front left bumper and windshield of Pecora’s car.

Champion and Laroche died at the scene.

A local hospital treated Pecora for minor injuries and later released him. He had reportedly been traveling back from a training at Fort Dix when the accident occurred.

Police closed all northbound lanes of the turnpike for about five hours, resulting in several miles of standstill traffic. By mid-morning all the lanes were open.

New Jersey state police are handling the case.
