A North Carolina police officer is suing Starbucks for $50,000 dollars after, he claims, a faulty cup full of boiling hot coffee left him not only with painful injuries, but also ruined his sex life.

Matthew Kohr says he was burned after the coffee cup's lid came off and the cup folded in on itself at a Raleigh Starbucks in January 2012.

The cup was reportedly offered to Kohr for free as part of the Seattle coffee giant's policy to dole out free cups of coffee to active duty police officers.

Kohr suffered burns, blisters and emotional damage, his attorneys said in court on Monday, WRAL-TV reports.

The $50,000 that he and his wife Melanie are asking for includes legal fees, damages and medical costs.

Kohr says the stress caused by the burns intensified his Crohn's disease, forcing him to undergo surgery to remove part of his intestines.

Kohr's wife also claimed the accident cost her "a source of emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner".

Starbucks told ABC13 that they could not directly comment on this particular case, but said that "the safety of our customers and [employees] is our top priority and we take our obligation to provide safe products very seriously."
