Police brutality: Were Brookdale cops out of line when they pepper-sprayed a student?

A video shot last Friday showing six community college police officers aggressively trying to subdue a student in New Jersey has gone viral.

Brookdale Community College nursing student Jeffrey Michel, 27, told the Asbury Park Press that he was on campus to study when he was confronted by school police officers who wanted to question him about an incident from the previous week when a friend had called the police on Michel. The friend said Michel was harassing him about a missing laptop charger.

Michel said he and his friend had already resolved the problem privately. Michel told police he didn’t want to answer their questions. He also asked them for their names and badge numbers.

"I asked them for a lot of things, but they wouldn't answer anything," he told the newspaper.

At this point Michel’s friend, Vincent Cordero, 18, began recording what would end up being an eight-minute YouTube video of the incident. Three officers are wrestling with Michel, who is holding onto the rails of a bridge, trying to maneuver his arms behind his back so they can handcuff him. Michel can be heard repeatedly asks why he is being arrested. The officers won’t answer and threaten to pepper-spray him.

Three additional officers arrive. At one point, one officer has Michel in a choke hold while Michel says he can’t breathe. Eventually Michel is handcuffed and then pepper-sprayed for good measure.

Both Cordero and Vincent Scuorzo, 19, who also witnessed the arrest, told the Asbury Park Press that Michel was a family man who was studying nursing at Brookdale Community College to help provide for his 2-year-old daughter.

Michel was charged with harassment, obstruction, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, all charges stemming from the fact he resisted arrest.

Did the cops went to far this time? Let us know in the comments.
