Selfie causes plane crash: pilot distracted by flash from mid-flight selfie, crashes aircraft

An investigation into a Colorado plane crash last spring has determined the pilot taking “selfies” with passengers contributed to the fatal crash that killed two.
The NTSB released a report last week stating Amritpal Singh, 29, the plane’s owner and pilot lost control on May 31, 2014 crashing the Cessna 150 while doing nighttime takeoffs and landings.
Investigators found a GoPro camera nearby and video showed the pilot and his passenger taking selfies at low altitudes sometimes using the flash.
“Based on the evidence of cellphone use during low-altitude maneuvering, including the flight immediately before the accident flight, it is likely that cellphone use during the accident flight distracted the pilot and contributed to the development of spatial disorientation and subsequent loss of control,” the NTSB said in its report.
The report also says Singh did not meet the requirements to be flying at night with passengers. The passenger killed in the crash is believed to have been a local musician.
