Ferguson protests: 2 police officers shot in front of Ferguson Police Department

Shots fired outside the Ferguson Police Department on Thursday night injured two police officers.
Police wearing riot gear confronted protesters outside the Ferguson Police Department during Thursday’s rally. The demonstrators were peaceful and the crowd was beginning to disperse when, shortly after midnight, two to four shots were fired from a residential street across from the police station.
One shot hit a St. Louis County police officer in the face while another hit a Webster Groves police officer in the shoulder. Both officers were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, however, both men’s conditions have stabilized.
According to a Reuters photographer at the scene, demonstrators fled the area after the shooting. Other police officers drew their weapons and aided the fallen officers.
After the shooting, more police wearing riot gear showed up with high-powered rifles and patrol vehicles to blocked the road.
Protesters began to gather outside the Ferguson Police Department on Wednesday after Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson announced his resignation. Jackson, along with five other members of the department, resigned in response to criticism the police department received over its policing policies in the aftermath of the August 2014 shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. Jackson has long been criticized for his department’s handling of Brown’s death and the weeks of protests that followed.
