In New Taipei City, just outside of the nation’s capital, a head on collision resulted in two fatalities.

A 21 year old university student, identified by his last name Hong, was driving home from work in the early hours of the morning when he dozed off, drifted into oncoming traffic, and struck a married couple riding a scooter.

The couple, who were immigrants from Myanmar, had just gone out for breakfast before preparing to go to work. The husband and wife were flung off the overpass onto the street below and died before emergency officials reached them.

The university student has been arrested and although he was not drunk at the time, he will be charged with reckless driving and manslaughter. The prosecution stated that they will consider raising the charges to murder.

The couple from Myanmar leave a university aged son and a high school aged daughter.
