Kenya university attack: al-Shabaab kills at least 147 people, more attacks possible
  • 9 years ago
Islamist militant group al-Shabaab killed at least 147 people in a Kenya university attack on Thursday. Experts warn the group may continue to attack the country as it tries to maintain its relevance among other extremist groups.

Al-Shabaab is a Somali terrorist group that is estimated to have up to 500 fighters. It hopes to turn Somalia into a fundamentalist Islamic State, CNN reported.

In 2011 Operation Linda Nchi, Kenya military crossed the border into southern Somalia and successfully wiped out some of al-Shabaab’s key bases, CNN also said.

In retaliation, al-Shabaab launched several attacks in recent years and has terrorized Garissa with grenade and machine gun attacks, according to CNN. Al-Shabaab sees children, schools and Christians as easy targets.

Christians make up the majority of Kenya. Only 10 to 15 per cent of the population is Muslim, according to Open Doors UK. Kenya ranks 19th out of 50 countries where Christians are persecuted.
