Islam in France: Muslim leader wants double the number of Mosques in France in two years
  • 9 years ago
A prominent Muslim leader has called for doubling the number of mosques in France in two years at a four-day conference for French Muslims.

It is estimated that about five million Muslims call France home, but Rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris Dalil Boubakeur put the number of French Muslims at seven million.

There are around 2,200 mosques across the country, but Boubakeur aims to double the number of mosques in France in two years.

"Islam is no longer an Islam stemming from immigration, it is a national Islam that has the right to the recognition and consideration of the French population, just like other communities in France," Boubakeur said.

Many French Muslims have taken to the streets to protest the government's refusal to build more Mosques.

Yves Threard, editor of conservative newspaper, Le Figaro, said the Muslim leaders can only blame themselves as they did not condemn the violence of the Charlie Hebdo shooting with full vigor.

France has been struggling to accommodate its Muslim minority population and stem the growth of far-right groups.

The country has seen a surge in attacks on Mosques and Muslim institutions after the Charlie Hebdo shooting.
