The Real USA - The UN considers solitary confinement an act of torture

No other country in the world holds as many people in solitary confinement as does the United States. It has been reported that at least 80,000 people spend around 23 a day alone in tiny cells, often for decades at a time. The United Nations considers more than 16 days in solitary an act of torture that causes devastating psychological damages. U.S. journalists formerly imprisioned in Iran speak of its debilitating effects as the worst experience of their lives. Yet the practice continues in the United States despite the astronomical costs of keeping a prisoner in isolation. Alexandra Hall reports for teleSUR.
