A dog in Sacramento is receiving credit for saving his owner’s life during a fire. The homeowner had been asleep at the time of the incident.

According to the Sacramento Fire Department, there were no working smoke alarms inside the house. The male only woke up after his chocolate lab, fittingly named Buddy, nudged him.

That's when he saw a fire had broken out in a bedroom located in the back of the home. The man made it out safely and has since been treated for smoke inhalation. Buddy also escaped the blaze.

This is the second house fire in the city that has occurred during a week’s time, in which there were no working smoke detectors. Now, officials from the Sacramento Fire Department are using both incidents to highlight the importance of functional smoke alarms.

A spokesperson for the department recommends checking the devices once a month to ensure they are working properly and changing the batteries every six months.
