Thousands of demonstrators spilled into the streets of Port-au-Prince on Saturday (December 6) to protest the government of President Michel Martelly.

The demonstration remained mostly peaceful, although tires burned intermittently along the protest route and protesters carrying signs denounced Martelly and Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe as they marched through downtown streets.

The throng walked long distances through the city on their way to the Canadian embassy to express their anger toward the Canadian government for supporting Martelly.

A heavy police presence was visible at the perimeter of the Canadian embassy and the situation was quickly defused.

Small fires were put out and a water cannon was used to dissuade anyone from coming near.

Martelly has been facing a heavy tide of opposition over the past year, but it has swelled recently after the government announced in October that it was postponing leg
