NYC grand jury to return no indictment in police chokehold case: local media

The Staten Island District Attorney confirms a New York City grand jury found "no reasonable cause" for indictment in the case of Eric Garner. That means there will be no criminal charges against a white police officer who used a chokehold on Garner, an unarmed black man who died as police tried to arrest him for illegally selling cigarettes.
The high profile July case triggered protests and sparked debate about how U.S. police use force, particularly against minorities. And it comes in the wake of a grand jury decision last week in Ferguson, Missouri, not to charge a white police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen.
Last week, Garner's family joined relatives of Michael Brown and the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem for a Thanksgiving prayer service.
Garner's death was ruled a homicide by the city medical examiner, who said police officers killed him by compressing his neck and chest but his health problems were contributing factors.
