Gruesome scenes from northeast Kenya, where at least 28 people are killed in an ambush on a bus.

Somalia's al Shabaab Islamists say their gunman staged the attack, killing non-Muslim passengers on the Nairobi-bound bus, in retaliation for raids on mosques in the port city of Mombasa.

Kenya's Inspector General of Police says most of the victims were Christians.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) KENYA'S INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, DAVID KIMAIYO, SAYING:

"The attackers who were heavily armed later fled towards the border between Kenya and Somalia. I have already ordered for a combined security team to be able to carry out a major operation and a crack down of the attackers."

A local security official says three people -- from the group led out to be killed -- saved their own lives by reciting verses of the Koran.
