One of this year’s joint Nobel Peace Prize winners is 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai. She is the very youngest to have landed the award.

Yousafzai had been in chemistry class in Birmingham, England, when the news came in. Her teacher pulled her aside and revealed that she was declared a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Despite that statement, which presumably came as a surprise, the teen went about her day and attended her classes as scheduled. She waited until school was over to speak at a press conference.

Yousafzai remarked “We should all consider each other as human beings, and we should respect each other. It is my message to children all around the world that they should stand up for their rights.”

Yousafzai was cast into the spotlight two years ago, after the Taliban shot her in the head. The reason she was targeted was because of her efforts to advocate schooling for young females in Pakistan.

Many people from all over the world followed her recovery and watched as she went on to become an inspirational spokeswoman for girls’ educational rights.

As part of her speech, she made sure to thank her dad for not clipping her wings and allowing her to fly and achieve her dreams.
