Brooklyn Bridge Park officials have shut down a local pedestrian bridge for bouncing too much. The Squibb Park Bridge opened in the Spring of last year.

The design allowed for slight movement, but in recent times, the subtle bouncing has turned into something quite a bit more prominent. In late summer the crossing was closed for repairs and it was originally slated to reopen in September.

The decision changed however and it was recently announced that the bridge will be temporarily closed until Spring of 2015.

The president of Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation stated “At this point.. it would be overly optimistic to say we could solve this in two to three weeks.. We need to fully understand the bridge and we want the public to know that we are really erring on the side of caution.”

The 450-foot long wooden bridge, which connects Brooklyn Heights to Brooklyn Bridge Park, cost 5 million dollars.

Tilt meters and accelerometers have been added to the crossing to keep track of movement. Park staffers hope those new additions will help solve the problem of why the bouncing increased significantly.
