Large blast kills at least one in Afghan capital as smoke rises above city

A plume of smoke rises above the Afghanistan capital.

A Taliban suicide bomber attacked a convoy of coalition troops, littering this Kabul Street with rubble and glass.

The blast tore through scores of cars along the main airport road near the US embassy, twisting them into mangled hunks of metal.

(SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) WITNESS HAJI AWAL GUL, SAYING:

"I was stuck in traffic when the explosion happened. It was powerful and the target was foreign vehicles."

Security forces and ambulances arrived at the scene minutes after the attack on Tuesday morning.

A foreign soldier from the convoy can be seen recieving first aid, a body lies next to him.

Tensions have been building in Afghanistan after a disputed presidential election destabilised the country.

Most foreign troops will withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of the year.
