Brother, aid co-worker remember slain British hostage

Friends and family mourn the death of British aid worker David Haines...

...after a video released by Islamic State appeared to show his beheading.

The 44-year-old father of two had been kidnapped in Syria last year.

This is his brother Mike on Sunday.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DAVID HAINES' BROTHER, MIKE HAINES, SAYING:

"We hope, we prayed in our own way. Unfortunately, it wasn't in our hands, it was not in the government's hands, it was in the hands of terrorists."

The town of Sisak, Croatia, is the place David Haines called home.

Over in Zagreb, a former humanitarian aid worker, says he worked alongside Haines in the 90s -- on reconstruction efforts following Croatia's independence from Yugoslavia.

(SOUNDBITE) (Croatian) AID WORKER, JOZO LJUBICIC, SAYING:

"For a man who helped others, who really helped unselfishly, to end up that way - I really don't understand it."
