Aleppo lies in ruins, as Assad forces advance on rebels

Black smoke rises above Aleppo... in this video that purports to show the aftermath of bombing by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

It's the latest evidence that anti-Assad rebel groups, who've held the city for almost two years with western support, are beginning to lose their grip.

But they're not going quietly. They're now fighting on two fronts...fending off the fundamentalist group called Islamic State in the north of the city while attacking government forces advancing from the south.

Residents are caught in the middle, with streets and buildings turned to dust and rubble in the hollowed out city.

A hundred miles to the east, the city of Raqqa is also the scene of heavy fighting, with government forces using airstrikes over the weekend to dislodge Islamic State fighters who've taken much of the city.
