Syrian rebels fight Assad forces in key Idlib town

New video shows rebels from the Free Syrian Army firing on positions said to be held by President Bashar al-Assad's forces in Areeha in Idlib.

The town, which lies on the slopes of Zawya mountain, is on the main road between the government-controlled coastal city of Latakia and the northern cities of Idlib and Aleppo where rebels and government forces have long been battling for control.

In the video, which was obtained by Reuters , Free Syrian Army soldiers fire at buildings with rifles and a tank.

Rebel forces said they were gaining ground in the area, and that they have raided several Assad government bases in the town.

Battles continued to rage around Syria while key powers forged a deal that aims to eliminate Syrian chemical weapons.

Various rebel forces have been fighting government units in a civil war which has claimed 100,000 lives since 2011.
