Typhoon hits Taiwan, 47 people killed in plane crash

The category two storm slammed into Taiwan, Wednesday, with heavy rains and 90 mph (miles per hour) winds.

At least one person was killed.

And residents were left shaken by the storm's fury:

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNIDENTIFIED RESIDENT SAYING:

"The winds were so strong that we couldn't see the iron house next to our house."

During a thunderstorm off the west coast, a TransAsia Airways plane crashed on its second attempt at landing.

Forty-seven people were killed, and 11 others were taken to a hospital for their injuries.

Typhoon Matmo downgraded to a tropical storm as it headed to China.
