Russian Submarine Finally Completed After 20 Years

Russia recently completed a 20-year long project. It’s a submarine called the K-329 Severodvinsk, although a recent re-designation reportedly now refers to it as the K-560. It’s job is to hunt other subs, ships and land-based targets.
The newly finished submarine is powered by a nuclear reactor. The Russian Navy has officially accepted the Severodvinsk as their own. It’s part of Yasen-class submarines which will soon become the Navy’s conventional sub force.
The craft wasn’t exactly easy to complete. Construction started on the submarine back in 1993.
The post-Soviet transition left very little room in the budget for the project. Finally in 2010, the Severodvinsk was launched and one year later, in 2011, ocean trials were underway.
On Tuesday, a flag raising ceremony of the Russian Navy on the submarine was held, proving the craft was a success in test runs. For the next 30 years, the Severodvinsk will remain in service.
The submarine measures 393 feet in length. It can travel up to 30 knots while underwater and has a submerged displacement of over 13,000 tons. The Navy’s newest prize is the first of the Yasen submarines.
Two additional Yasen submarines are currently being built while work on a third one is scheduled to get started next month.
