Sweden suspects Russian submarine is hiding in Baltic Sea. Russia says ‘no’

The Swedish military is continuing a search of the Baltic Sea in the archipelago near Stockholm after they were tipped off about suspicious activity in the region, Reuters reports.

More than 200 military personnel are involved in the search, which includes Swedish Navy ships and helicopters. The forces include the HMS Visby, a corvette that is equipped with stealth technology and equipment for anti-submarine warfare, according to Reuters.

Swedish military officials first intercepted a radio transmission on a frequency often used by the Russian Navy for emergencies from the archipelago area last week. More encrypted radio traffic was picked up after the search began last Friday, originating both from a point in the archipelago and Russia’s Kaliningrad region across the Baltic Sea, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal said.

Rear Adm. Anders Grenstad of the Royal Swedish Navy said during a news conference on Sunday that Grenstad said foreign underwater activity could potentially be a submarine, a mini-submarine or divers with an underwater vehicle.

Grenstad added that three credible observations had been made, two on Friday and one on Sunday. A picture taken from land released by the armed forces showed a white spot in the sea, but the photo was not clear enough to determine more about what it was.
