Karzai calls Afghan election "one strong step forward"

In Afghanistan, the polls are now closed and they're starting to count the ballots to determine who will replace Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Turnout was high with some voting centers reporting they ran out of supplies.

(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) AFGHAN PRESIDENT, HAMID KARZAI, SAYING:

"The participation of our dear countrymen in this elections takes Afghanistan one strong step forward toward stability and prosperity. Afghans have taken a strong step forward while the enemy of the country attempted to disrupt the election."

Despite worries about widespread violence, the day was mostly peaceful; at least, relatively.
