Republican Cantor suffers shocking loss to Tea Party rival

A stunning Republican primary upset.

U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia lost to Tea Party challenger David Brat.

He conceded Tuesday night:

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER ERIC CANTOR, SAYING:

"I know there's a lot of long faces here tonight, and it's disappointing, sure. But I believe in this country. I believe there's opportunity around the next corner for all of us."

Reports show Brat had approximately 56 percent of the vote to Cantor's 44 percent.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DAVID BRAT, SAYING:

"What we should do is love one another. I did not run against Eric Cantor as a person. He's a good man, I respect him as a person. I ran against a set of principles. I espoused those on my webpage."

During his campaign, he accused Cantor of betraying conservative principles on spending, debt and immigration.
