Tea Party candidate David Brat won a shocking victory over House Republican leader Eric Cantor in the Republican primary on Tuesday after attacking Cantor for his stances on immigration and the federal budget.

Cantor's defeat is seen as a major blow to hopes of immigration reform. Cantor had said that he opposed amnesty for illegal immigrants but wanted Republicans to work with President Barack Obama on immigration reform issues.

Cantor outspent Brat, a professor at Randolph-Macon College, $5.7 million to $231,000, and an internal poll for Cantor's campaign indicated he would win a 34-point victory.

Although immigration hurt Cantor, the main issue was a "throw the bums out" mentality in Virginia's Seventh Congressional District, which stretches from suburban Washington to suburban Richmond, which became more conservative after redistricting in 2010.
