After posting a video of themselves dancing to Pharrell’s ‘Happy’, six Iranian men and women were arrested in Tehran.

Before they were detained, their video had gotten over 175 thousand views, and one of the participants and creators posted a thank you on Facebook.

Shortly after all those involved in making the fan tribute were picked up by local police.

According to the police chief they were arrested because of the, "obscene video clip that offended the public morals and was released in cyberspace."

The group was forced to repent on television.

Among those coming to the defense of the youths was Pharrell himself who said, "It is beyond sad that these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness."

Twitter has also been abuzz with comments about how ludicrous and unfair the officials’ actions against the video makers were.

The National Iranian American Council released a statement of condemnation as well, citing the actions taken by authorities as unfair and nothing more than a means of isolating Iranians from the rest of the world.

Just prior to the video being published, the Iranian president publicly encouraged citizens to use the Internet as a means of communication.
