Israel’s former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been sentenced to six years in jail by a court in Tel Aviv for his role in the Holyland corruption case.

Ten individuals have been convicted in the process that involves bribery in the development of a controversial residential project in Jerusalem.

Olmert is one of three found guilty of accepting bribes.

The former prime minister pocketed the equivalent of 105,000 euros while mayor of Jerusalem.

His defence team called on Judge David Rozen to hand down a community service sentence.

Rozen declined saying such a punishment is not acceptable in the Holyland case.

In a statement after the verdict Olmert said, “I never asked or received a bribe, neither directly or indirectly, not for myself or those close to me or my relatives.”

Olmert is set to appeal.

He is the latest in a long list of elected officials to be convicted of corruption.
