Name Change Considered for Spanish Village Called 'Castrillo Kill The Jews'

The name of one specific Spanish Village may soon be changing. Many will think the title switch is long overdue, as the current name is Castrillo Matajudíos, which translates to ‘Castrillo Kill the Jews’.

The proposal for the change was brought on by the local mayor, Lorenzo Rodríguez. He hopes residents will vote in favor of changing the name back to its original version, Castrillo Mota de Judios. That meaning is far less shocking, translating to ‘Castrillo Jews Hill.’
Locals believe the town’s name has been in place for about 500 years. According to historical accounts, in 1035, Jews fled from a nearby village during a riot and sought shelter on the hill.
Rodríguez further elaborated stating "The people of Castrojeriz took up arms against the king's emissaries, killed five of them and 66 Jews, while the rest were banished to Castrillo, which became known as the Mota de los Judios."
Fast forward to 1492 and the Jews were expelled from Spain. It was right around then that someone decided to unkindly change the name of the village. The 60 or so residents in the village will vote on the reverting proposal this week.
