Two pilots and two passengers were killed when a Cessna Citation jet crashed in a landfill near Trier, Germany on Sunday (January 12).

A spokesman for Trier-Fohren airfield said the plane was travelling from Shoreham airport in West Sussex, England to Trier-Fohren airfield in Germany. Several reports said all four on board at the time were of German nationalities.

According to Sky news and The Mirror, the plane burst into flames after it crashed into a landfill near the town of Trier, damaging a power pole in the process. There was dense fog in the area at the time of the crash, ZDF reported. However, it is unclear whether that was the cause of the crash.

Local police said someone who witnessed the crash called emergency services immediately after. Footage and pictures from the crash site show the burned-out wreckage covered in white foam after firefighters battled to put out the blaze.

Investigators are looking into the details for what caused the crash. The identities of those on board the jet were not released.
