"The time of Al Shabaab is over," Somali General says

The Somali National Army and the African Union Mission to Somalia patrolled the town of Qoryooley on Sunday, some 100 kilometers from the Somali capital Mogadishu.

It comes following the town's liberation from Al Shabaab militants a day earlier.

The African Union said a two-pronged attacked surprised the Islamist militant group.

The Somali National Army Deputy Chief of Defense Forces had this message for the militants.

(SOUNDBITE) (Somali) SNA DEPUTY CHIEF OF DEFENSE FORCES, GENERAL ABDIRIZAQ ELMI, SAYING:

"I would like to send a message to the people who are still in Al Shabaab: The time of Shabaab is over. We call on the Somali youth trapped in Al Shabaab to go back to their communities and take the amnesty offered by the Somali president and the people."

A number of Al Shabaab insurgents were killed during the operation, the African Union says.
