At least seven people were killed when a commuter train collided with a fuel truck in Indonesia on Monday morning, marking one of the worst train accidents in the country's history.
The incident took place at 11:21 local time, when the commuter train was at a crossing in Binatro Permai on its way to central Jakarta, according to a report by the BBC.
The truck, which carried canisters of liquefied gas, rammed into the train. A reporter at the scene told the Jakarta Globe that the truck was driving too quickly to allow the safety barrier to come down in time.
The impact was so strong that the first two carriages of the train were derailed and the truck was flipped on its side.
600 passengers are believed to have been on the train at the time of the collision. Panicked passengers, many of them crying and screaming, attempted to flee from the train's carriages. Some managed to make their way out after others broke the train's windows from the outside.
The crash triggered multiple explosions and the whole area was engulfed by plumes of smoke.
The first and last carriages were designated for women only - a common feature in Indonesian trains.
It was confirmed that the truck was owned by Pertamina, the state energy company. However, the company's spokesman did not comment on whether the driver had been speeding.
Train accidents are common occurrences in Indonesia, as many residents use train for daily commutes. In 1987, two trains collided near the site of today's crash, which resulted in the deaths of 156 people.
