North Korea’s Kim Jong Un marks his late father's birthday

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Saturday (February 15) presided over a large gathering to commemorate his late father Kim Jong-il's birthday.

The reclusive country's state-run television KRT on Saturday broadcast a pre-recorded video of a national meeting held in celebration of the anniversary, showing officials applauding and vowing loyalty to the Kim dynasty.

Current leader Kim Jong-un was sitting on stage flanked by high-ranking officials, but he did not make a speech.

North Koreans are told that Kim Jong-il's was born on February 16, 1942. February 16 is called the "Day of the Shining Star" and celebrated as a national holiday in North Korea.
