Al-Qaeda linked group claims responsibility for Cairo bomb blasts

An al-Qaeda-inspired militant group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis claims that it has carried out a deadly bomb attack on police headquarters in Cairo.

The Muslim Brotherhood condemned the attack saying they wanted a “peaceful revolution”.

Cairo residents working near the city’s police headquarters have been reacting to what happened.

One man who worked next door said: “We didn’t realise what had gone on, the metal doors of our shops were blown out, the windows, the glass… everything was destroyed, I wonder what on earth happened to the policemen who were at the scene.”

Another elderly man sobbed, “There is too much evil in the world and not enough good.”

The explosion killed four people, including three policemen, and injured dozens more. The interior Ministry said the attack happened early on Friday morning when a suicide car bomber blew broke through concrete barriers.

Nearby shops and buildings were badly damaged.

There was a second bomb attack a few hours later close to a metro station, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen.

A third exploded happened near a police station in Giza on the outskirts of Cairo with no reported casualties.

Supporters of the army, who ousted President Morsi in the summer, staged a demonstration on Friday afternoon outside the bombed police headquarters.
