Hundreds demand justice for abused Indonesian maid

Thousands of foreign domestic workers outraged by the alleged abuse of an Indonesian maid by her Hong Kong employers protested to demand justice and greater protection for their community on Sunday (January 19).
Chanting slogans "we are workers, we are not slaves," the demonstrators in red headbands demanded justice for 23-year-old Eriwana Sulistyaningsih, who suffered heat burns on her arms and legs as well as bruises on her face after allegedly being abused by her employers for eight months.
Organisers said 5,000 participated in the protest, but police did not have an estimate of the turnout.
One of the organisers said the government should scrap rules such as obliging helpers to live with their employers and a "two-week" rule that allows helpers only two weeks to find a new contract when they leave their employer.
