Burial of assassinated former Lebanon finance minister

The funeral of assassinated Lebanese politician Mohammed Chatah has taken place. The former finance minister was killed in a car bomb in Beirut on Friday.

Chatah, a Sunni Muslim, was a prominent critic of both Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and Shi’ite movement Hezbollah.

Lebanese police and army cordoned off much of central Beirut where Chatah was set to be buried next to ex-Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri who was assassinated in 2005.

Rafik’s son, Saad al-Hariri, also a former prime minister, directly accused Hezbollah.

But Hezbollah condemned the blast as a “horrible crime.”

Lebanon has seen a wave of bombings over the past months as tensions rise in the country’s Sunni and Shi’ite communities over Syria’s civil war.
