Float plane crashes in Hudson River near Albany

A float plane crashed in the Hudson River near Albany, New York on Thursday afternoon, local authorities say.

The pilot of the small, twin-engine pontoon plane was the only occupant identified by police as of Thursday evening.

State police believe the small green plane took off from Columbia Country Airport. According to witnesses, there was no smoke or flames as the plane came down. One witness said it looked at first as if the pilot was about to perform a stunt.

"It looked like everything was fine ... like it was going to be a trick, like he was going to get close to the water and fly back up, but he went straight down," Christopher Malloy told local news outlet The Daily Freeman.

The plane broke up on impact and immediately sank.

Emergency workers responded to the crash, but leaking jet fuel prevented police dive teams from immediately entering the water.

Authorities are still attempting to determine if there were any passengers on board.
