Rich groom stuns Chinese netizens by sending 8,888,888 RMB (US$1,457,195) dowry
  • 10 years ago
A wealthy groom's family has shocked Chinese netizens by hauling multiple baskets filled with banknotes to the bride's home in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, in China on Monday.

In the Chinese culture, the dowry is delivered up to a month, or at least three days, before the wedding. The groom and a friend, or a matchmaker, will deliver the gifts on the auspicious date chosen.

The lavish engagement present reportedly weighed 102 kilograms in total. In addition to money, the bridegroom also sent her family wine and some daily necessities.

However, local traditions demand that the woman's family will also have to give the groom a dowry, and might need to return part or all of the money given to them once the actual wedding day arrives.
