Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger was sentenced Thursday to life in prison.

A judge handed down two consecutive life terms plus five years for crimes including a string of murders when Bulger was the notorious leader of the Winter Hill gang back in the 70's and 80's.

In handing down the sentence, the judge told the gangster, who is now 84, "The scope, the callousness, the depravity of your crimes are almost unfathomable."

Bulger was arrested by the FBI after 16 years on the run.
