Disneyland accident: Boy hurt in Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Paris park

A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured after falling off a boat in the Pirates of Caribbean ride at Disneyland Paris on Wednesday afternoon. The boy, identified as Iban in French reports, was from Montpellier in southern France and was accompanied by his father and younger sister on the ride, when he fell.
The ride, which features boats passing through a musical pirate setting, the inspiration for the Disney films starring Johnny Depp, was almost at its end when the incident took place. Before reaching the unloading section, the boy stood up, despite a warning asking passengers to stay seated. The ride was at a normal pause, and when the boat started moving again, the boy lost his balance and fell into the water, according to a report by Le Parisien.
The boy was hit by the following boat and was pulled down. He was pinned between the bottom of the vessel and the bottom of the track, which compressed his chest cavity, according to reports.
The father was able to free his son, and rescue workers arrived quickly to help. The boy was taken the Necker Hospital for children in Paris, some 20 miles away from the theme park. The boy was initially listed in critical condition, though his status was upgraded late Wednesday evening.
The ride was temporarily closed and a police investigation was launched to determine the cause of the incident.
This was not the first time in recent history injury was reported at the park. In 2011 five people were seriously injured on the Thunder Mountain ride.
