Obama observes moment of silence on 9/11 anniversary

U.S. President Barack Obama observed a moment of silence at the White House lawn on the 12th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States.
Obama was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden for the solemn gathering honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed when hijacked jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field.
The moment of silence was held at 8:46 a.m. (1246 GMT) in observance of the moment American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, followed by another when United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
The President was expected to head to the Pentagon later on Wednesday.
