At least six dead as French train derails

This isn't how a summer holiday is supposed to end.

At least 6 people were killed and a dozen seriously injured Friday, after a regional train en route from Paris derailed and hit a station platform at Bretigny-sur-Orge in central France.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) ANONYMOUS PASSENGER IN CRASHED TRAIN, SAYING:

"It felt like we were going over gravel, it was an unusual feeling. And then I saw that the carriage that was in front of me was starting to turn over on the side and my carriage had broken windows. It was very overwhelming."

The national rail operator said the train was carrying 370 people and travelling just as families were heading off to start their summer vacations.

Passengers told local media victims had been crushed or electrocuted.

President Francois Hollande toured the site and said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
